HOW TO GET STAINS OUT OF CARPETS AND RUGS

Do you have a few unsightly carpet stains you have meant to get out, but keep putting off? While it's way easier to just move a couch or a table to cover up those problem areas, now is actually the perfect time to tackle those spots as the warmer weather allows for quicker drying. Here are a few hassle-free and budget-friendly tips for spotless flooring.

The basics

  • Never scrub an old carpet stain as it could make the stain travel deeper into the rug or carpet fibers. Rather use a cloth and lightly blot the stain.
  • Never use a dyed cloth or towel. Choose a white cloth to ensure that the dye does not transfer to the carpet.
  • Clean the outer part first and then move in, otherwise you might make the stain even larger.
  • Always test your cleaning product in an area that's not visible to ensure that the rug or carpet doesn't react to the treatment.

Affordable stain removal solutions to try

  • Water and dishwashing liquid:
  • This is the safest method to try first, especially if you're not sure where the stain is from. This preparation won't stain and is gentle enough for wool blend carpets. Simply mix 1 cup of water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Work this into the stain with a white towel, but be careful not to get it too wet. Let sit for a few minutes, then blot the stain with fresh water and a clean cloth to get the soap out of the carpet.

  • Water, vinegar and dishwashing liquid:
  • For tougher, water soluble stains like juice or food dye, mix 2 cups of water with a tablespoon each of vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Again, use a clean white towel, let the solution sit for a bit and then blot with clean water.

  • Baking soda and vinegar:
  • Great for old grease stains, but test it out on a hidden area of your carpet first! Sprinkle the stain with a layer of dry baking soda. Mix a cup of white vinegar with a cup of water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle and spray the stain with the mixture. The vinegar will foam and start cleaning the stain. Let sit for a few hours to harden, then break up and use your vacuum to clean the area.
